Waiting on Wednesday (#3)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, and it features an upcoming release that we're crazy excited for and literally cannot wait to get our hands on.

This week's pick is:

Winterspell
by Claire Legrand
Genre: Fairy Tale Retelling, YA
Publication Date: September 30, 2014
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Pages: 464 pages

The clock chimes midnight, a curse breaks, and a girl meets a prince . . . but what follows is not all sweetness and sugarplums.

New York City, 1899. Clara Stole, the mayor's ever-proper daughter, leads a double life. Since her mother's murder, she has secretly trained in self-defense with the mysterious Drosselmeyer.

Then, on Christmas Eve, disaster strikes.

Her home is destroyed, her father abducted--by beings distinctly not human. To find him, Clara journeys to the war-ravaged land of Cane. Her only companion is the dethroned prince Nicholas, bound by a wicked curse. If they're to survive, Clara has no choice but to trust him, but his haunted eyes burn with secrets--and a need she can't define. With the dangerous, seductive faery queen Anise hunting them, Clara soon realizes she won't leave Cane unscathed--if she leaves at all.

Inspired by The Nutcracker, Winterspell is a dark, timeless fairy tale about love and war, longing and loneliness, and a girl who must learn to live without fear.

Why I'm Waiting...

First, I have never, ever, in my entire life heard of a Nutcracker retelling, so to say this is awesome is a HUGE understatement. Ever since I first watched Barbie in The Nutcracker when I was little, I have been in love with the story of a young girl and a wooden prince, so of course I'm excited for the book version which can only be better! I'm hoping I get to read this book the day it comes out, but I might end up saving it until it starts snowing just so I can really get into the mood (yes, that is exactly how book-obsessed I am).

Really? I actually thought the cover was gorgeous haha. Glad you're excited for the book though!
I used to go see the Nutcracker Ballet every Christmastime, it was a tradition of mine and my mum's :) So I have quite a soft spot for it, as well. And now that you mention it, I don't believe I have ever heard of a Nutcracker retelling either, which is really surprising! It means that there's lots of room for different interpretations before it gets played out :) And I really love the idea of saving this one until there's snow on the ground!!

That's such a wonderful tradition! I've never gotten to see a ballet, but I've always dreamed of it. It seems like it would be such a beautiful thing to see *dreamy sigh*. And I agree! Hopefully this retelling inspires several other retellings of The Nutcracker as well, and I can't wait to see how many different interpretations authors can come up with. I love the idea too, but I don't know if I'll have the patience to wait that long lol.
I hadn't either, so at least it's definitely a unique retelling for once. :) And I mean, the cover looks gorgeous and badass. ;)
