Time Turning Reads Turns One! + Giveaway

Aaaah I finally made it to my first ever blogoversary! Some of you know that I've been blogging since I started high school, and I've had five blogs since then. Maybe some of you have followed me over from Keeper's Book Reviews and/or Swimming Through Thoughts, and if so, I'm glad to see you guys again! Not once have I made it to a blogoversary before, so this is a very special day for me :D I guess the real question is: what made this year's experience so difference that I didn't run away to start a new blog again? Well, that was a combination of several things.

1. You guys! I've met so many more people this year than I ever had before. I started commenting on more blogs and commenting back more frequently on mine, and I've formed so many new relationships while also strengthening older ones. This was also my first year on social media, and this - especially Twitter - is the best way I've found to talk to other bookish people. This way I get to talk to everyone even if I'm on a hiatus or am simply too lazy to go blog hopping.

2. Learning to love my blog design. The main reason I used to switch blogs every now and then was because I was never accepting of my blog design. I would switch back and forth from Blogger and Wordpress because sometimes I felt my design was boring or not good enough, and other times I craved a professional design that only Wordpress blogs seemed to have. This year though, through several hiatuses (as you probably noticed) and other such mental struggles, I convinced myself that I was okay with this design, and if I was that desperate I could pay for a professional, custom design when I'm older. For now though, I'm proud of this design; after all, what could feel better than knowing you created everything on your site?

3. Taking it slow with ARC's. One of my biggest problems time and time again was that I went crazy when requesting ARC's. I got better with it every year, but every time I looked at my review pile I'd feel this huge weight on my shoulders. My mistake was that I requested popular books and books that sounded vaguely interesting instead of only the books that I knew I would reach for with eagerly grasping fingers. I've gotten so much better this year, which is why nowadays I have less early reviews on the blog. Of course, in the same way, you know that if I'm reviewing an ARC, you know it was a book I was super excited for.

4. Making it personal. When you look at some of my other blogs, all you see is an abundance of reviews with a few weekly memes thrown here and there. Now, that's not too different from what I do here at Time Turning Reads, with one exception: on my other blogs, I could be anyone. I tried to write professionally and by doing that, I lost my own voice. Here, I don't reign my crazy in - I let it roam free. I feel that you guys have a certain idea of who I am based on the way I write and the nonsensical things I sometimes say, and I hope that it's an accurate representation of who I am. I think that makes the blog feel more me that simply another site in the world wide web.

5. Everyone is super nice and supports my hobby. This kind of goes with #1, but it's an important reason of why I keep blogging, so I think it deceives it's own point on the list. Sometimes I don't always know why I continue blogging and wonder what would happen if I just stopped. Other times I'm curious as to whether anyone even reads the blog (people who are genuinely interested in the things I have to say, I love you). But every once in a while a friend or a stranger complements an aspect of my blog or tells me they can see my love of books shining through my reviews, and it makes me smile. It makes me want to keep on doing what I now realize I love doing best: blog. I hate to sound needy, but hey, no one's perfect ;)

Speaking of no one being perfect, I bet you have a ton of suggestions on things I could do better on the blog, so let me get to the constructive criticism part of today.

What I Need To Work On

I'm going to be working on a few major things this next year as I try to make Time Turning Reads more reader-friendly and in general, just more awesome XD. Here they are:

MORE GIVEAWAYS. Clearly I haven't been doing enough giveaways this year. It's not so much a problem of a lack of books so much as I'm not always sure which books you guys would like to have as giveaways. I should probably do polls or something to see which books you would prefer, but I'm not sure how many people would actually respond haha. Either way, there will definitely be more giveaways on the blog going forward.

More discussion posts, and maybe even some Back in Time posts about what's been going on in my life. Most of what I do on this blog are reviews and memes such as TTT and WoW. I may have to bring back Stacking the Shelves this year, we'll see. I'm also eager to work on some discussion posts to, well, discuss books with you guys. Now, I see some bloggers churning these out every week, but unfortunately, I'm not that skilled. Brilliant thoughts/ideas rarely go through my head, so I will be forcing myself to think of some discussion topics, though hopefully they just come to me like bees do to honey. Hopefully. I'm also thinking of bringing back Back in Time posts so that you guys know what goes on in my life outside of the blog and reading - the only problem is that I don't have much of a life outside of these things...

Try requesting some physical ARC's? This is the scariest thing ever, but I think I should try it during my second year of blogging (gosh, I love saying that). Now that I know for sure I won't be spontaneously leaving the blog and I've had a solid year of blogging experience, it might be a good time to start reaching out to publishers. It's just so life-affirming getting a physical advanced reading copy in your possession and knowing you're trusted to take care of it and review it and love it forever, you know what I mean?

Participate in way more book tours. Book tours are always fun, but you can find them on other blogs more than you can on this one. I'll have to take part in many of those this next year, especially since they're a nice break from reviewing and add something else to the blog. If any of you have any blog tour tips for me, please tell me below in the comments!

BEA 2016. Please. Though my first year on the blog has been great and I've met several authors through Twitter and such, I have yet to go to a bookish event, author signing, BEA, BookCon, etc. I'm hoping this will change next year. As many of you know, next year's BEA and BookCon take place in Chicago, which is relatively close to where I live. Also, thank goodness I'm a college student now, because school now ends early enough that I could go. I just have to get my dad on board and I may actually be able to go and meet you all. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

I'm sure I'll find many more things to work on as the year goes on, but for now, these are the main aspects I want to improve on Time Turning Reads.

And Finally, The Giveaway

For those of you who skimmed or skipped everything before this and went straight to the giveaway, I can't blame you. I hope you'll like what comes next.

This is going to be a unique giveaway in that it's not actually one giveaway, but several in one. There will be several different book packs to win, and each set will have one winner. To make it fair, one person can only win up to one book pack. The first winner chosen will win pack #1, the second pack #2, and so on. Since there are four packs of books, by the end of this giveaway, we will have four different winners. Below are the different packs you can win.

1. Contemporary Love Pack (4 books)

The books in this pack are all a part of my favorite Contemporary Romance series by one of my favorite authors, Jennifer Probst. This is the Searching For series, and the books are below. Click on the covers for the Goodreads.

2. 2015 Favorites Pack (2 books)

True, this pack doesn't have too many books, but if you asked me what my two favorite books of 2015 were, they'd be ACOTAR and ADSOM. If you haven't heard of them, the books are below and you can click on the covers for the Goodreads.

3. Mental Health Pack (9 books)

Those of you who read a lot of YA novels probably noticed that this year has been a bit heavy in the mental illness sub-genre. Though I was unsure about the popularity of the genre at the beginning of the year, I've come to realize that these are actually some of the best books I've read. The mental health books in this pack are listed below - click on the covers for the Goodreads.

4. LGBT Reads Pack (5 books)

I haven't read a ton of these, but I have read one and it was adorable, so in this pack I'll be sharing some other popular LGBT books that have been hyped up around the blogosphere. As always, click on the covers for the Goodreads.

And that's the last of the packs! I'm hoping that at least one of these packs, if not all of them, catches your eye, hence the diverse nature of the packs. This giveaway will be going on for two months, so make sure you enter as many times as you want by then! I'll be picking winners and sharing them over Twitter, but I will also email the winners whether or not they follow Twitter. Good luck, everyone!

A Seraphina-riffic Giveaway

It's a few days after Easter, and I realize that anyone in their right minds would probably be sharing the bunny love, maybe the duckling love, and even quite possibly the lamb love (as I'm writing this I'm imagining all these animals in chocolate form...yum). Of course, being the crazy, unusual person I am, I'm choosing instead to share the dragon love, because dragons beat all those animals combined by a landslide.

The second book in the Seraphina series, Shadow Scale, came out not too long ago, and while I haven't had a chance to read it yet even though it's been on my TBR for quite a while now, that's no reason that you guys shouldn't have the chance to read it! Well, read both of them, actually, since I realized Seraphina is a #quietya. For those of you not on that Twitter grind, that's a hashtag going around where people share great young adult novels that not many people have read. Great concept, right? Because of this, I decided that I'd give the entire series away in this "seraphina-riffic" giveaway; this way, you can enter the giveaway even if you haven't read the first book in the series :)

It's possible that some of you have never heard of this series in your life, and so are on the fence about whether or not this giveaway is worth your while. I'd say yes - you've got nothing to lose by winning the series - but if you're still not convinced, here are the covers below. I'm a huge "judge a book by its cover" kind of person, and I know one of the reasons I first read Seraphina is because of the cover (though there was a different, prettier (in my opinion) cover at the time I read it). Either way, look at the matchy-matchy!

And obviously I wouldn't be giving away this duology if the the plot wasn't amazing as well. I'd recommend these books if you're a fan of High Fantasy, dragons, and princes. Oh, and romance, how could I forget. Feel the feels, guys. If those things are right up your alley, then what are you waiting for? Enter the giveaway and keep your fingers crossed ;)

Dragon-iffic Details

• Giveaway begins today, April 9, and ends in a month, May 9, at exactly midnight.
• This is an international giveaway.
• There will be one winner.
• You can tweet about the giveaway once per day, and each tweet will get you another entry!
• Anyone who has already done some of the giveaway entries in previous giveaways I've hosted - such as following this blog - just fill in your information, you've basically got yourself an extra free entry!
• Books will be sent through email as soon as the giveaway ends.
• Full contest terms and conditions can be found on Rafflecopter.

Wishing you all the best of luck! <3

February 2015 Giveaway - Just 'Cause

It's the last day of February, the last couple of days have been filled with headaches, eye aches, and stomach aches, and between it all, I figured, why not just give everyone a giveaway since everything else is going so spiffy? In truth, ignoring all the bodily aches I've been having - I think my Coke Zero addiction may have something to do with it - February of 2015 has actually been a fabulous year. Not only did the month go by ridiculously fast (YAY!), but this week, my dreams came true when I got both a POP! Baymax figure and a copy of A Darker Shade of Magic from Barnes & Noble! They are literally making my life at the moment; I am in bliss.

Perfection, am I right? Also, anyone who is on the fence about buying A Darker Shade of Magic (ADSOM), let me tell you that it is a must. Yes, I'm only 247 pages into it so far - and that's only because I ran out of red post-its to mark the extra amazing quotes with - but every page has been magical, literally, and whether you read YA or Adult, it's one book you really don't want to miss out on. It may end up making your 2015 that much better. Just imagine the New Year's conversation next year...

*fireworks explode in background*
You: *tearing up* The best part of the year was Victoria Schwab's ADSOM. Such amazingness may never come again, and I'm just happy to have lived in the year it was released. ADSOM is a blessing to everyone, man. Don't you agree?
Dude: ...never heard of it.

And then of course you'd explain to Dude what it is. And possibly get a better bookish friend. But you get my point, right? ADSOM is a necessity in everyone's life. Just take my word for it, as well the fact that it has a 4.26 rating on Goodreads :D So yeah, be on the look out for a raving review of ADSOM soon!

Now. The giveaway will feature a set of four books, and there will be a total of two people who end up each with a set of the books. I tried to pick books that are pretty popular at the moment, so hopefully at least one of them catches your interest! Here are the books you can win.

  1. A Wicked Thing by Rhiannon Thomas
  2. I'll Meet You There by Heather Demetrios (Author of Exquisite Captive)
  3. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
  4. An eARC of Crimson Bound by Rosamund Hodge

The Deets

  • Two lucky winners will each win a set of the four ebooks pictured above, one of which is an eARC, the rest of which were published February, 2015.
  • The giveaway begins February 28th, and ends March 20th at midnight.
  • You can tweet about the giveaway once per day, and each tweet will get you another entry!
  • Anyone who has already done some of the giveaway entries in previous giveaways I've hosted, just fill in your information, you've basically got yourself another free entry!
  • The books will be sent by email as soon as you win.
  • Giveaway is open internationally.
  • Full contest terms and conditions can be found on Rafflecopter.
Good luck, everyone! May the best two people win! :)

A Bloggish Existential Crisis

People who know me also know that I get bored of my blogs very easily. It's not exactly the blog itself that I get fed up with, but the design, and even the name. For those of you who don't know me that well, I've had five or six blogs since my freshman year of high school (I'm a senior now), so yes, I do indeed have problems. I'm at that point in my life where I want to change literally everything about this blog right now, but I'm trying to be smart and resist the temptation. In fact, I'm sitting here eating Reese's Peanut Butter Trees and trying to dissuade myself of the notion. I think it's working.

Anyways, I figured if I was having a crisis on Christmas, then you probably are too. You're probably sitting there going why am I following this person who never does anything? I agree, which is why I'm giving you guys a MERRY CHRISTMAS GIVEAWAY! It's been much too long since I've given away any books, and in truth, that's probably why I'm going a bit crazy right now. Besides, what better time than Christmas to act the Santa and give away some bookish presents, right? So without further ado, here's the giveaway (I hope you guys are as excited as I am)!

The above five novels are ones that either I enjoyed or I have heard a lot of good things about and know that many other people want to read (if they haven't already). In fact, any of these that I haven't yet read, I will definitely get around to sooner or later. There will be a total of three giveaway winners in total, and each winner will win one ebook copy of the following: The Body Electric by Beth Revis, Mortal Heart by Robin LaFevers, Exquisite Captive by Heather Demetrios (AMAZING book by the way), The Winner's Crime by Marie Rutkoski (one of the best books ever, if I do say so myself), and Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater. With five such gorgeous books ready for the taking, what reason is there NOT to enter, am I right?

This giveaway ends on New Year's Day, so keep your fingers crossed until then!

Well, that's all I've got for you guys this time, but I hope you enjoy it! Good luck, and have a very merry Christmas!

Review + Giveaway: Love Edy by Shewanda Pugh

This book was in no way what I expected, but that's both a good thing and a bad thing. One thing is for sure, this novel is in no way your average contemporary romance, and judging by that cliffhanger, there's more to Hassan and Edy's story than forbidden love. However, I'll get to that little bit later.

As I was reading the first chapter, this book seemed right up my alley. There's the girl pining after the guy, and the guy who supposedly sees her as a little sister. It started off along the lines of my favorite romances, but it was YA instead of NA, and I was engaged. I was excited. I couldn't WAIT to see how their love would unfold. Of course, it took me a while to get used to the fact that Hassan is an Indian boy, since in today's media Indians aren't exactly known for their jock status or hotness (it's not racist since I'm Indian!). After I got on board though, I couldn't wait to see how the couple would overthrow an arranged-at-birth marriage!

I guess it's too bad that I never got to find out >.< I had no idea this was part of a series until I saw the "'Love Edy' continues Fall 2014" note right after the cliffhanger. I kind of died a little inside. The cliffhanger made no sense whatsoever, and left me wondering whether Hassan and Edy would ever get together. I mean, they obviously will, but I don't know if I have the patience to read another novel just to find out, especially since this first book was forcibly dragging me along for the ride. I would have liked this book so much better if it was a stand-alone, shorter, and the characters didn't act like such children.

What did interest me in the novel was the Indian culture. As a person who's going to have an arranged marriage myself one day (though it wasn't arranged at birth, thank goodness), I kept finding myself comparing my life and Hassan's. While his mother was pretty close to an Indian mom, I still think she should have been stricter, and more intent on keeping Edy and Hassan apart. And Hassan complained about wishing he had normal American parents, but his life was pretty close to a normal American's. Unlike him, I'm not allowed to go to parties, and I definitely wouldn't be allowed to just randomly kiss guys. Speaking of, I do not understand how Hassan was allowed to kiss a girl, invite a girl to his house, and/or let her sleep over IN HIS ROOM? NO Indian parent, under ANY, would allow that, especially if his son already had a future bride. Still, while the unusual portrayal of Indian culture bothered me, I doubt it'll really stop anyone from enjoying the story.

As I said before, the plot was pretty interesting, and Wyatt's character was kind of creepy and would have helped make an excellent story, if only this book didn't drag. There were elements added that I didn't see the necessity of, for example, Edy's summer vacation spent with her cousin in New York...I don't think we need to know about how she wanted to learn a new style of dancing. And Edy and Hassan's behavior when they were together? It was obvious they wanted each other, and their jealous tantrums were getting on my nerves. I'm not a person known for having patience, and with the novel spending more time on Edy and Hassan pretending to be friends, Hassan bullying Edy's friend, etc, I soon grew bored.

I spent almost two years with these characters, and I wish 'Love Edy' focused instead on a smaller period of time, quickened the plot, and made Edy just a bit less Hassan-crazy. Nevertheless, that out-of-nowhere ending caught my interest, and I would love to find out exactly what was happening. I'd recommend fans of romance and mixed-culture relationships to give this novel a try, because if there's one thing this book is, it's unique.

Book Synopsis: When Edy Phelps falls hard for her best friend, she knows nothing can come from it. Forget actual chemistry, or the fact that she cherishes his mother more than her own; centuries of tradition say that Hassan will grow up, marry the girl his parents pick, and forget his best friend: the dancer with the bursting smile. Except he can't. In a world erupting with possibilities for the boy with a body of steel and dreams of the NFL, everything seems promised while nothing at all is; when he's denied the girl he wants most.

Two hearts. Two families devoted through generations of friendship. Could Edy and Hassan really risk all that? And yet ... how could they not?

Early Review + Giveaway: Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass #3) by Sarah J.Maas

"You didn't need a weapon at all when you were born one."

There are no words to describe this book. I just finished it and I am literally broken. I'm amazed I'm even writing right now, that my fingers are moving across the keyboard, because all I want to do is lay on my bed and let the book sink into my mind, let myself fully register what just happened. Because what just happened is crazy. Terrible. Painful. Horrible. Mental. Tear-jerking. Hateful. Hopeful. Fearful. And it's just mean that I have to wait a year to get more answers, yet at the same time undoubtedly be assaulted with more questions. Anyways, my point is that this review may not completely make sense because, like I said before, this book destroyed me, and it's a wonder I'm even attempting to put into words something that cannot be put into words (only sobs, whimpers, and screams).

When I first started the book, I was a bit annoyed with the characters. They were all so messed up as a result of what happened in the last book and I just wanted them to all stop pitying themselves and start kicking butt like they always do. Thankfully, after Rowan showed up in Celaena's life, things started picking up. And weirdly enough, things started picking up for Chaol after he meets one of the King's most fearsome generals, a person he hates. He was kind of mopey throughout the entire book, but I suspect that a meeting with Celaena will fix that up. Ohh I just can't wait for their reunion (though I will admit I may have been just a teensy bit unfaithful to Chaol for a while. Oops. Dorian took up one of the smallest parts of the novel, and I'm oh so thankful to that, because he annoyed me most of all. What happens at the end though...it completely makes up for everything (as endings often do).

I'm ashamed that I was bitching about Celaena boring me in the beginning though because of the sheer quantity of emotional and physical pain she had to endure throughout the novel. Her pain brought tears to my eyes, which says a lot considering I'm not a crier. Several times I found myself just proud to love her and know her since she is for sure one of the strongest heroines I've ever known. Like, I can't think of anyone who's had to go through what she has (and I'm talking about book characters). As much as I adore Celaena, I would NEVER want to be her; she is selfless and brave and strong, and if I had to face what she did, I'd probably drop dead from shock.

Basically reading 'Heir of Fire' is like reading three books, or four if you'd rather. There are four different parts of the story: Chaol's and Dorian's stories (sometimes they intertwine, sometimes they don't), Manon's story, and of course, Celaena's story. At the beginning, I found myself resenting each of these stories except Celaena's. What did I care about an evil witch, a pitiful guard (sorry Chaol, but you really had problems), and a prince whose romance annoyed the heck out of me. Now Celaena and Rowan? They were interesting.  You know me, whenever I see a tall, brooding guy, the first thing that pops into my head is "romance!". However, the author kept me guessing until the very end (and again, what an end it was).

Anyhow, I digress. What I was trying to say was that while at first I disliked all the different perspectives and stories contained within the one book, at about halfway through the book I started enjoying them, and really getting into the other characters' stories, and many times I was thankful for them as Celaena's life became way too intense for my already wet cheeks and eyes. I grew invested in Manon's relationship with her wyvern, and yes, I actually came to like her. I also started growing fond of Celaena's cousin, Aedion, after I got to know him more (though I still don't love him or anything...he's not the nicest guy in the world). And the Healer, Sorscha, she still annoyed me. There was nothing bad about her really, but she seemed so...I don't want to say stupid, but...okay I don't know how to describe what I disliked about her. Maybe it's because she had thoughts like Gods, his lips were soft. Just...no.

One of my favorite things about 'Heir of Fire' was seeing how the characters changed from the beginning of the book until the very last page. Each of them changed significantly thanks to events in the book, and it was interesting watching my feelings toward them alter. At the start, it was easy to judge the characters, but once I got to know them more - or they revealed more about themselves - I saw the good and bad sides of everyone. I suppose it all came down to the fact that everyone was petty in the first chapter, and started growing from there.

The author also made me realize that even I can enjoy a story without the entire book revolving around two lovers. While 'Throne of Glass' started out concentrated on the love triangle between Celaena, Dorian, and Chaol, 'Heir of Fire' focuses completely on character development, history, and the upcoming war (c'mon, we all know it's going to happen), and it barely even touches on any romance. And yet what surprised me was that I STILL LIKED THE BOOK. Amazing, right? I don't know if it's because I'm growing as a person, or because of Sarah's skill as a writer, but I'm leaning toward the latter.

Even at the third book in the series, the author managed to bring new characters and conflicts into the series, and am I ever so glad she did! We learn so much more about Celaena in this book than we ever did before, and I can guarantee you won't want to miss even a second of her past (or the glimpse into the future). Though 'Heir of Fire' was not what I expected, in some ways it was better, and I advise everyone to purchase this book as soon as it comes out, and/or enter the giveaway for the ebook below!

P.S. I absolutely fangirled over the fact that both this book and the last one ended with Celaena sailing away on a ship!!!<3

Book Synopsis: Lost and broken, Celaena Sardothien’s only thought is to avenge the savage death of her dearest friend: as the King of Adarlan’s Assassin, she is bound to serve this tyrant, but he will pay for what he did. Any hope Celaena has of destroying the king lies in answers to be found in Wendlyn. Sacrificing his future, Chaol, the Captain of the King’s Guard, has sent Celaena there to protect her, but her darkest demons lay in that same place. If she can overcome them, she will be Adarlan’s biggest threat – and his own toughest enemy.

While Celaena learns of her true destiny, and the eyes of Erilea are on Wendlyn, a brutal and beastly force is preparing to take to the skies. Will Celaena find the strength not only to win her own battles, but to fight a war that could pit her loyalties to her own people against those she has grown to love?

Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Bet Book Blitz + Giveaway

This book blitz is hosted by Xpresso Book Tours.

When I first read the synopsis for the book, I immediately added it to my TBR list on Goodreads. It seems to be the perfect read for any Jane Austen fan, and so why wouldn't I add it? Since people who read this blog tend to have interests that often run parallel to mine, I figured signing up for this book blitz would be in order so everyone else could find out about this book too! I really hope that it's as good as the synopsis led me to believe. This book blitz includes both a giveaway and an excerpt from the book, so make sure you keep reading! The excerpt is something I definitely wouldn't want to miss.

Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Bet
by Marilyn Brant
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publication Date: July 15, 2014
Publisher: White Soup Press

The course of true love doesn’t always run smooth…

Everyone thought Beth Ann Bennet and Dr. Will Darcy had an unexpected romance in Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Match (Perfect #1).

Now, Beth’s best friend, Jane Henderson, and Will’s first cousin, Bingley McNamara, begin their own unlikely love story in Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Bet (Perfect #2), which starts at the Bennet/Darcy wedding when the two of them find themselves in the roles of maid of honor and best man for the newlyweds.

Jane is an interning school psychologist and a woman who wears an angelic mask in public, but she’s not as sweet tempered as she’d like everyone to believe. Turns out, she may have just crossed paths with the one person who’ll unnerve her enough to get her to reveal her true self.

As for Bingley, he’s a wealthy, flirtatious, compulsively social guru of finance, who likes to wager on stocks and, let’s face it, on just about anything that strikes his fancy. But this dedicated ladies’ man may have finally met the woman who’ll challenge his bachelor ways!

Pride, Prejudice and the Perfect Bet…where life’s biggest gamble is the game of love.

Excerpt #1

Finally, the procession out of the church began, and Jane, as maid of honor, had to walk back down the aisle with Bingley, the supposed "best" man. Oh, joy.

“Delightful ceremony,” he pronounced loudly, insuring that everyone nearby would hear, as he formally offered her his arm. But he looked at her as if he’d much rather promenade with a python.

“I agree,” she said, smiling tightly and playing the part.

He cast an absolutely ecstatic grin at the friends and family in attendance as the two of them took their first steps toward the church’s foyer. “Only the receiving line and the final pictures,” he hissed, his lips near her ear as if sharing a secret. “And then I can start getting drunk. I plan to be pretty damn buzzed before our special dance.”

She leaned closer to him and hissed right back, “So funny! I was thinking exactly the same thing.”

“Yeah? I remember the last time you got your hands on some champagne, Jane. Who are you gonna be making out with in the coat room tonight?”

She gripped his arm perhaps a little more forcefully than necessary. “Not you.”

He winced but didn’t stop walking or faux grinning at the congregation. “Oh, I wasn’t offering, sweetheart. I’ve already been burned once. I don’t do second chances.”

She gulped. To her ear, he sounded hurt, which both surprised and irritated her. He was acting like some innocent in the whole thing. Like he hadn’t been trying to take advantage of her—one way or another.
That he hadn’t made a bet that involved her. Huh. She’d tear him apart limb by limb, this very second, in fact, if it wouldn’t ruin her dress before the reception.

Beth and Will had stopped just up ahead of them and were getting ready to greet their guests in the receiving line. Before Jane pulled away from Bingley to dutifully take her place next to Beth, she gave the quote-unquote “best man” her parting shot. “I don’t do second chances either,” she informed him. “And, for the record, you might as well pay up Dustin and buy your own beer, ‘cause there’s no way you’ll win your ‘gamble.’ At least not with my help.”

Jane had the satisfaction of seeing him freeze in his spot, a look of shock and confusion on his handsome face as she turned her back on him.

Now that she’d told him off at last, he’d have to stay away from her, except when their attendant duties made interaction absolutely necessary. Seriously, how much more trouble could the guy cause in less than twenty-four hours, right?

Right.

Excerpt #2

Bingley couldn’t help but sneak a few more looks at the fiery maid of honor, remembering the way they’d first met four months ago. Jane had seemed so…nice, for want of a better word. Too sweet for him to want to tamper with or tease too much, although Beth hinted there was more to Jane than her pleasant veneer might suggest.

He hadn’t believed that at first but, oh, he believed it now, as she swiveled to face her friend, sending another death stare in his direction, then a much kinder, warmer look to his cousin.

“You’re gonna be really happy, Cuz,” he whispered to Will, who was smiling at his bride Beth as if he’d just won the lottery and it was being hand delivered to him in a pretty package of white tulle.

“Thanks, Bingley,” his cousin murmured. “I owe you, you know. None of this would’ve happened without you.”

Bingley swallowed away a sappy emotion he didn’t want to succumb to in public and clenched his jaw to keep from saying anything either overly sentimental or just plain stupid. Much as the whole commitment thing gave him hives, Bingley couldn’t have been happier for Will. The guy deserved every ounce of wedded bliss.

“Anything for you,” he finally managed, meaning it, but unable to stop the wave of irritation that hit him in the gut when he caught Jane rolling her eyes at him from the periphery.

No, she wasn’t nearly as nice as she appeared, although he’d thought she was pretty awesome during the engagement party a couple of months back. Jane had downed, perhaps, a few too many glasses of celebratory champagne, and the two of them had ended up in the coat room, making out like teenagers. He quickly learned three other very interesting facts about her:

She wore some really racy undergarments beneath her simple, classically cut clothes.

She could do several wickedly imaginative things with her tongue. Both excellent discoveries, in his opinion.

But her emotions jumped up and down like an insanely volatile stock during a wild trading day.

Bingley exhaled and tried to stop his mind from playing the X-Ray Vision game every time he caught a glimpse of Jane standing demurely by the altar.

Although, how could he keep himself from wondering if she had that leopard-spotted bra on underneath her red dress, like the one she’d been wearing in July, hmm? Or, why she had all but sprinted away from him when he saw her again a few days later, and why she’d studiously avoided him at the few other events they’d both had to attend since then… They’d barely made it past second base at the engagement party. Was she embarrassed? Had he unknowingly done something wrong?

C’mon, man, get a grip!

He knew from years of experience that he was better off not caring about what women thought of him. Keeping his emotions out of any relationship was the key.

Seeing Will with Beth together had lulled him—temporarily—into believing that whole “happily ever after” thing might happen for him, too. Their connection through that online dating site had encouraged him—briefly—that a “Love Match” wasn’t impossible. So he’d entertained the idea of dating more seriously when he met Jane.

Big mistake.

He knew what he was: a lifetime bachelor. And there wasn’t a woman in the world who could snag his heart long term. He’d be willing to bet on it.

Still, he had a few assets.

He was young, reasonably good looking, wealthy…and he sure as hell didn’t need a pseudo-sweet, temperamental, psychologist chick blowing him off, especially after he’d let his guard down long enough to get close to her one hot summer night. Wouldn’t happen again.

Besides, this was a wedding. There were plenty of smart, beautiful babes to be found—it’d be like cherry picking blue chips in a bull market—and he was the guy to find them. The sooner the better.

Excerpt #3

Jane pointed an accusatory finger at the red smudge on Bingley’s shirt. “Slipped your mind already, eh? The lipstick? Clearly, you’ve already found another victim, and you didn’t even wait until after the bouquet toss.”

Bingley didn’t miss a step as they continued to dance, but he fingered his collar thoughtfully, almost as if he were lost in a memory. To Jane, it was like seeing a mask drop from his face, if only for an instant.
Then his expression changed.

His lips twisted into an absolutely devilish grin, which he paired with an eye-widening/eyebrow-raising movement that succeeded in giving him the most unsettling, most oxymoronic air of…rakish innocence.
What a conniving little rascal.

“You’re awfully curious about my whereabouts given that you want nothing to do with me yourself,” he said with the measured, pleasing tones of a late-night radio host. “What do you care about a—oh, how did you put it? Ah, yes, a ‘manipulative and insincere’ man like me? Why does it matter to you what I’m doing, hmm, chickie?”

“Do not call me chickie.”

His grin broadened as he did a little swivel step, spinning her around once. “Sorry, sweet pea. Is that better? Would you prefer plum cake? Honey bunch? Sugar bear? Darling Jane?”

“Just Jane.”

“As you wish,” he said with a laugh. “So, Just Jane, you still haven’t answered my question.”
“I’m not curious. And I don’t care what you do. Forget I said anything.”

“No worries, Just Jane. I’ve already forgotten everything you’ve ever said to me, including, but not limited to—” He lowered his voice. “Those little moans you made when I kissed your neck and sucked slowly on your lower lip.” There was a hardness in his tone, but he laughed for their audience on the sidelines, just like he’d done at the church. Looking every bit the delighted and amiable best man. Nodding at both his parents and hers as they passed near that side of the room. Twirling her again, just for show, a little faster this time. Fast enough that it was dizzying, and she felt the full effect of her lightheaded state.

Despite the cloudiness in her brain, though, something critically important became clear to her, and she needed to address it. She stopped dancing.

“What’s wrong?” he asked.

“I don’t like you.”

He sighed. “Yeah. Noted.”

“But—” She paused. “Look, can we talk over there?”

He nodded and let her lead him to an open area by the dessert table. The scent of cut slices of wedding cake infiltrated her senses. So much vanilla frosting and sliced strawberries. She got a sugar rush just from inhaling.

“Bingley,” she said, “whatever our personal feelings are, they don’t matter. We’re both really close to Beth and Will. Our paths are going to cross—probably a lot more often than either of us would like. I mean, seriously, if the Reverend Elton, our parents and all of these witnesses weren’t here, I’d love to strangle you for trying to play me this summer. But, for the sake of those we care about, we’re going to have to just be friends…or die trying to act the part.”

He smiled at her, though she couldn’t tell if it was more affectionate or patronizing, the way one might regard a naïve child. “Don’t you ever watch movies? Men and women can’t be friends. Not really. Not if both people are straight.” He shrugged. “We’re human. The sexual attraction will always get in the way. Every time.”

He drew closer to her and whispered, “Face it. This is not destined to be the start of a beautiful friendship. I, for one, can’t say I’ve ever spent ten seconds thinking about the undergarments of my friends. But the thought of what you’re wearing underneath that red dress has been plaguing me for hours. Zebra stripes? Leopard spots? Purple polka dots?” He eyed her bridesmaid gown with scrutiny, as if he might be able to see through the flimsy fabric.

“Well, stop thinking about it.” She snatched a plate with a piece of cake on it from the dessert table and thrust it at him. “Here, eat this. Just…just focus on something else.”

Bingley stood very still—the cake plate in his hand.

Abruptly, he broke off a corner section of the white cake and lifted it until it hovered between them like a spongy ghost. He licked his lips but, instead of eating the cake himself, he offered it to her. This was so unexpected that her jaw dropped open and, before she realized it, he’d slipped the bit of wedding cake into her mouth.

As she chewed, their gazes met again and something she definitely did not want to acknowledge passed between them.

He shook his head. “I thought you looked hungry,” he said, raising one dark eyebrow and handing the plate back to her. “When you’re ready to be honest with yourself, Just Jane, you let me know. Until then, I’ll playact ‘friendship’ with you in front of Will and Beth, but don’t be fooled into thinking it’s real. It’s ‘manipulative and insincere’…and, let’s not forget, it’s your idea.”

And, with that, Bingley McNamara strode away from her and out of the hotel ballroom.

Well, that's all there is for this blitz (not that that wasn't a lot). Are you going to add this book to your TBR?
