This is hands down the best book published in 2013. There is nothing out there that can even compare to it, which, to tell the truth, is kind of surprising. After reading 'Beautiful Creatures' and not liking it, I didn't really have a lot of trust in Kami's writing. While reading this though, I literally could not put it down. This was the most un-put-down-able book out there this year. It's a bit of a combination of 'City of Bones' and 'The Summoning' by Kelly Armstrong, two great books by the way if you haven't read them yet.
Now while that's all fine and good, there's also the fact that this novel scared the hell out of me while I was reading it. I apparently chose a terrible time to start reading this; my parents were out of the house, my brother had gone outside to play with his buds, and almost all the lights in my house were turned off. And I was sitting in front of a mirror. Great spooky setting right there. Then add all the vengeance spirits and that creepy serial killer from the book, and it's just peachy. I literally had goosebumps on my arms while reading this.
One thing the synopsis fails to mention more about would be the twins that save the main character, Kennedy. Their names are Lukas and Jared, and let me tell you, I definitely prefer the latter. He's definitely everything I could ever want in a guy: dark, secretive, and hateful in that way that really means he wants you. I love him!
Luke, the other brother, is a great guy and all, but he just isn't the one for me. Also, while he seemed really nice when you first meet him, and whenever he talked to Kennedy about anything but Jared, but when he's angry, he can get really manipulative. I'm not sure if that's true - or even the right word - but that's what I believed when I saw him. I guess I could just be biased though.
The plot was amazing. What can you not love about a plot about an evil demon who creates vengeance spirits to try and destroy everyone in the Legion, meaning Kennedy (maybe), Jared, Lukas, Priest, and Alara. They're amazing characters, and I loved how much Jared seems like Jace and Alara seems like Isabelle from 'City of Bones'. So yeah, basically, the storyline is awesome.
The plot of the story is really quick though, and doesn't really make time for too many details. This was both a pro and a con for me: pro because I finished the book quickly, con because I want to know more and be able to spend more time in this world. Still, the shortness of the book is making me even more eager to get the next book. I really can't wait to read it!
What about killed me at the end of the novel was the major cliffhanger. About a chapter or two before the end, I was freaking out that that would be the ending. The words at the end of the chapter were just perfect for a cliffhanger. When I turned the page and found another chapter, I was literally on my knees thanking God. Then I come to the end, ruthlessly tapping the margin on the page, hoping for another chapter. But nope, the book really was done this time. I felt like punching something; my life was ruined. I never expected that Kami is "up there" with all the other amazing authors!
Apparently, the next book in the series is going to be called 'Unbound', and it's only coming out next year. I'm going to be raging about this for a while, so please stick with me through these tough times. I'd recommend this book to basically any YA book lover, though you might want to keep away of you're afraid of ghosts and/or demons; you might not be able to go to sleep otherwise. Either way, I'm going to be telling everyone I see to make sure they read this book.
